The Silverfish (Zygentoma)
Funny how some songs seem write themselves…
I wrote the lyrics for this one and and its melody leaped out of the pages. I had unwittingly written a sea chanty! I envisioned a group of friends at a seaside pub (called, of course, The Silverfish) singing a friendly song and gradually all joining in the chorus.
Ricardo Lugo is a Cardiologist in Nashville, and my oldest son – so naturally (?) I tapped him for the main lead! He’s joined first by Bobby Isola (my son-in-law) and his cousin Jonathan Ruiz (who also played the guitar), then by Javi Lugo (my other son) and his wife, Sarah, then by Javi’s friend Monica Carvalho. I added the old-man voice.
What a way to finish the album!
And I hope one day to sing this song out loud The Silverfish Pub…

Zygentoma Lyrics
and Song Sample
A primitive insect, lived millions of years,
400 & 20 of them it appears.
I never developed wings that can fly,
my movement reminds you of fish swimming by.
CHORUS
Oh….
Give me your linen, your wallpaper glue
Carpets & clothing, and tapestries too.
A Silverfish am I, slick are my looks.
Although not a book worm, I sure love your books!
Silverfish, Silverfish,
Although not a book worm, I sure love your books!
Earwigs and Spiders come hunting at night
but I run so fast they won’t catch me, not quite!
Myself, I’m no hunter – no others will hurt.
I just search for starches amongst all the dirt.
CHORUS
Oh…
Give me your dandruff, your hair and your wig
Some silk or some photos, and I’ll dance a jig!
A Silverfish am I, slick are my looks.
Although not a book worm, I sure love your books!
Silverfish, Silverfish,
Although not a book worm, I sure love your books!
Do you think I’m pretty? I sure hope you do!
My shiny scales give me a silvery hue.
Which end is my head and which one my tail?
Antennae or cerci? To guess you may fail!
CHORUS
Oh…
Give me your cereal and coffee, please do!
The paint in your ceiling and some plaster too.
A Silverfish am I, slick are my looks.
Although not a book worm, I sure love your books!
Silverfish, Silverfish,
Although not a book worm, I sure love your books!
SILVERFISH! SILVERFISH!
