The Mayfly (Ephemeroptera)

The Mayfly, whose delicate existence as an adult is limited to one day in most species, has come to symbolize the fleeting (or ephemeral) nature of our existence.

Mayflies are crucial in the food web of ponds, lakes and other fresh water ecosystems.  They provide food for fishes, birds, and other invertebrates.  In fact, the famous “flies” that trout fishermen painstakingly tie are often attempts to mimic this insect!

As I started to compose this song I realized I knew only one person who could do it justice: the Voice of Cassini from my 2009 album “The Cassini Mission”.  Laura Lugo Carlo is a trained Musical Therapist with the most beautiful voice I have ever played for.  The first time she sang this song while I played the piano, and I heard those imagined sounds in my head become real through her artistry, I burst into tears.  I hope you will also be moved when you hear her interpretation of Ephemeroptera.

Ephemeroptera Lyrics
and Song Sample

Of ancient lineage

from Carbon’s period

Spared extinction’s dismay.

One year on stage

Our nymphs and naiads

Survived ’til today.

For today is all we have,

There is no tomorrow.

Fly on diaphanous wings,

Waste no time in sorrow.

One single, glorious day!

Fail in Love we won’t.

Blooming clouds of Fay,

now you see us…
