The Dung beetle (Coleoptera)

Dung beetles are found throughout the world, filling an important niche in their environment – that of recycler of animal wastes.  They are a favorite of mine because of what they do with their dung: they roll it into balls and then, amazingly and very amusingly, they roll it away and dig it for later use.

The song uses all the synonyms I could come up with for “poop” (well, almost all!).  It gives a reason for any child (or child-like adult) to gleefully sing out loud these words, and to rhyme “excrement” with “condiment”.  And let’s all cheer for the beetle!

Roll it, roll it!

Eddie Isola is the founder and lead composer for The 502s; he also played the rhythm guitar in this song.  Go listen to their wonderful music!  (www.the502s.com).

Coleoptera Lyrics
and Song Sample

I am the Lord of Poo,

Covered in goo

Soft, wet, smelly

Number two

I find excrement

A spicy condiment.

Don’t care for my meal?

We’ll have an argument!

CHORUS:

And I will hold it, mold it,

into a ball,

Then I will roll it, roll it

Winner takes all!

Coprophagous

Scarab of Dung

If it makes you feel queasy

Just move it along, just run along!

The ancient Egyptians

Called me a God

For rolling the Day Star

That’s not so odd.

When I find some stool

It makes me drool.

Why waste your waste?

Don’t be such a fool.

CHORUS:

And I will hold it, mold it,

into a ball,

Then I will roll it, roll it

Winner takes all!

Coprophagous

Scarab of Dung

If it makes you uneasy

Just move it along, just run along!

BRIDGE:

(I find me some feces)

    I’ll chop it to pieces!

(I step on manure)

    And I’ll  say “Bonjour!”

(I don’t care for scat)

    I like it like that!

(I run from a turd)

  And I’ll call it “Absurd!”

I am the Lord of Poo…

CHORUS:

And I will hold it, mold it,

into a ball,

Then I will roll it, roll it

Winner takes all!

Coprophagous

Scarab of Dung

If it makes you feel queasy,

Just run along!

(Roll it, roll it) – Don’t step on me!

(Roll it, roll it) – Don’t step on me!

(Roll it, roll it) – Don’t step on me!
