The Praying Mantis (Mantodea)

This is one of the most distinctive insects you may find in your backyard.  Master of camouflage, it has inspired Human culture for centuries.

The song is in three parts, as the insect first speaks to humans (“my friend”), then to the insects it hunts (“my prey”), then finally to its potential mate (“my love”).

Will he survive his mating, or will he become Food for her?

Scott Foster Harris (www.facebook.com/scottfosterharrisofficial) is an American singer/songwriter who answered my call for this special request.  His rendition highlights the Zen-quality of the insect, while not shying away from its awesome creepiness.    A masterful interpretation!

Mantidae Lyrics
and Song Sample

TO THE HUMANS

I am Mantikos – the Prophet

Guides lost travelers home.

Those who see me know that

Luck will follow; you’re not alone.

Diviner, soothsayer

Bird-fly of devotion

I inspire Shandong boxing

For I am stillness in motion.

Then if you look at me

In admiration

My legs reaching

In supplication

Be still, go within, meditate

Reach a place of calm

Your spirit I will elevate

No need for alarm

I will pray for you: my friend.

     TO THE INSECTS

Okamakiri – the Scythe Cut

Hiding in plain sight

Swaying back & forth, should you

Stay or take flight?

Raptorial legs are twitching

Eager to embrace!

I’m so close to you that’s it’s now

Time to Say Grace.

When you look at me

Intoxication

My legs reaching

Hypnotization

Be still, go within, meditate

Reach a place of calm

My spirit you will elevate

As I strike out with my arms

I will pray for you: my prey.

  TO THE MATE

You are Circe, a siren,

Singing by my side.

Am I right in fearing for my life?

So close to my bride!

But do I risk

Decapitation,

Gazing at you

In adoration?

I’ll be still, go within, meditate

Reach a place of calm

Your spirit I will elevate

Take me in your arms,

Take me in your arms!

And you will pray for me,

Oh Please, pray for me: my Love.
